Remembering Summer
Every summer I spend a couple of weeks in Skåne, the southernmost part of Sweden. I love the white sandy beaches of Österlen that stretches for miles and miles. The clear waters stay cool even on the warmest summer days so it is never crowded with bathers.
This photo was shot in the middle of July 2021 with a Polaroid 195 camera. The film I used is my absolute favorite, Polaroid 669. The lack of contrast and color, which adds a dreamlike quality to the image, comes from the film being many years out of date. The white area to the left is a haphazard effect also due to the film being old which suits this picture perfectly as it helps underscore the sense of loss, memories and the passing of time, themes I often work with. The title ”One day I wrote her name on the strand”, is the opening line of the poem Amoretti LXXV by the 16th century English poet Edmund Spenser.
I hope you notice the couple walking on the beach.
